The Most Aromatic and Moist Greek Recipe

Portokalopita is one of the most beloved Greek desserts, bursting with the aroma and flavor of fresh oranges. It’s easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion. Follow our recipe for a delicious, syrupy result!

Ingredients:

For the base:

  • 1 pack of phyllo dough
  • 4 eggs
  • 200 gr sugar
  • 200 g yoghurt
  • 200 ml sunflower oil
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • Zest of 2 oranges
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Für den Sirup:

  • 300 ml water
  • 300 g sugar
  • Juice of 2 oranges
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Instructions:

Preparing the phyllo:

Spread the phyllo sheets on a baking tray and let them dry completely. Then, crumble them into small pieces using your hands.

Making the mixture:

In a bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar until fluffy. Add the yogurt, sunflower oil, baking powder, orange zest, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Add the crumbled phyllo sheets into the mixture and stir until they absorb the liquid.

Baking:

Pour the mixture into a greased baking pan and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.

Syrup:

Boil the water, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and cinnamon stick for 5 minutes. Let the syrup cool completely.

Soaking with syrup:

As soon as the portokalopita comes out of the oven, pour the cold syrup over it and let it absorb fully.

Serving:

Allow the portokalopita to cool completely and serve with vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of yogurt.
