1965-2025
our history
Our story begins in 1965 and covers a journey of 60 years. In the intervening years, our guests have shared moments of carefree, relaxation and unforgettable memories in the rooms, apartments and villas of "Xenophon accommodations". Most of them have been won over by the place and our hospitality. They choose to visit us every year and have now become permanent "seasonal residents" and a part of our family.
Restaurant Mermaid
1965
In 1965 in Matala, the previously unknown fishing village of Crete that became a magnet for thousands of "Flower Children", a couple with concerns, Xenophon and Sophia Andrianaki, create the Mermaid Tavern, a gathering place for hippies from all over the world who had arrived there in search of the meaning of life, as well as for the permanent residents and other visitors.
Chez Xenophon
1970
In 1970, Xenophon, together with his son Jiannis, created the hotel "Chez Xenophon" in Matala. The first accommodation that laid the foundations of a successful career in the hospitality industry.
The apartments
1975
Jiannis, with his youthful enthusiasm, has found the meaning of his life in hospitality. In 1975, he expanded the activities of the family business and built the first rooms of our complex in Matala, which we now call "Apartments & Studios Xenophon."
The first house
2000
The area is now attracting many visitors and their preferences are evolving. Villa "Sofia" comes to offer a "country home" and the autonomy in family vacations which is now a new demand.
Modernization
2005
The "Apartments & Studios Xenophon" are being redesigned and renovated from the ground up. The small rooms are transformed into modern apartments and studios to meet the needs of both loyal and new guests of the complex.
Pitsidia
2017- today
Jiannis' daughter Sophia and her husband Nikos are the 3rd generation to continue the family vision. The new members bring new breath, new ideas, and a modern perspective on quality hospitality. Yannis is gradually developing a new complex in Pistidia adding a new accommodation almost every year. A beautiful settlement of 8 villas, apartments and studios offering an alternative holiday proposal.
