When the Earth Reminds Us of Its Power

Everything You Need to Know in Case of an Earthquake in Crete

On Wednesday morning, the earth beneath our feet here in southern Crete gave a gentle reminder of its nature. A moderate earthquake was felt throughout the island. Although the tremor was strong in some areas, there was no damage to buildings, infrastructure, or — most importantly — to our peace of mind.

In Crete, it's not the first time the ground has danced a little. Locals know how to read the signs of nature. They smile, stay calm, and carry on with their day.

“Just a little shake — the raki didn’t even spill.”

Still, since our guests may not be familiar with such events, we’ve prepared a simple safety guide to help you feel calm and protected — no matter what.

During an earthquake – If you’re indoors

  • Stay calm. Fear can be more unsettling than the quake itself.
  • Do not rush outside while the ground is shaking — it’s safer to stay indoors.
  • Take cover under a sturdy table or stand beside an interior wall, away from windows and tall furniture.
  • Protect your head and neck with your arms or a pillow.
  • If you’re in bed, stay there and cover yourself with a pillow.

During an earthquake – If you’re outdoors:

  • Move away from buildings, balconies, trees, and power lines.
  • Choose an open and safe area, like a courtyard or square.
  • Stay calm and observe your surroundings — nature knows how to speak to us if we listen.

After the earthquake:

  • Check your surroundings for any damage or shifted items.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Follow the guidance of our staff or emergency responders.
  • If you feel uneasy, talk to us — we’re here for you.
