The National Celebration of March 25th

A Day of Pride and Remembrance

March 25th is one of the most significant national and religious celebrations in Greece. On this day, we honour the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, which marked the struggle for liberation from the Ottoman Empire. At the same time, the Church celebrates the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important religious events. This dual celebration unites historical memory with faith, giving the day a special significance. Additionally, it is the name day for those named Vangelis and Vangelia.

Historical Background

The Greek War of Independence began in March 1821 as a result of the people’s desire for freedom and self-determination. According to lore, the revolution was officially declared on March 25th at the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra by Bishop Germanos of Old Patras, who raised the flag of the revolution. The struggle of the Greeks was long and arduous, demanding great sacrifices and determination. Ultimately, Greece's independence was officially recognized in 1830, marking the triumph of an entire nation’s efforts.

Ways of Celebration

March 25th is commemorated with great splendour throughout Greece. Student and military parades take place, religious services are held in churches, and events are organized to highlight the historical significance of the day. Schools prepare theatrical performances, poetry recitations, and tributes to the heroes of the revolution.

An important part of the tradition is the celebratory meal of the day, featuring codfish and skordalia (garlic sauce). This dish, though simple, is deeply rooted in Greek tradition, as it serves as an exception during Lent, allowing the consumption of fish.

The Meaning of March 25th

The national anniversary of March 25th is not just a day of remembrance but also an opportunity for reflection. The struggle of our ancestors reminds us of the value of freedom, unity, and dedication to high ideals. This day calls on us to preserve our historical memory and draw inspiration from those who sacrificed for the independence of the nation.
